In the late 2022<\/a> JSH issue, Ren\u00e9 Beyer was featured twice in the opening pages of a now essential section of the Journal Suisse d’Horlogerie JSH<\/a> called \u201cA contre-emploi, talents parall\u00e8les<\/i>\u201d (Unconventional talents, side passions). It is a portrait gallery of figures from the world of watchmaking, often presented from the unexpected perspective of their hobbies and interests.<\/p>\n

In my introduction, I wrote: \u201cThey consider themselves professionals in fields that are not officially theirs. And they do rather well. Outside of watchmaking, they pursue unusual jobs and passionate hobbies with the nobility of true amateurs. Their \u2018<\/em>second professions\u2019 reveal them to us differently, making them more endearing…<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

From \u201cBeyer Talks\u201d to Zurich bees<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ren\u00e9 Beyer and his tireless curiosity deserved a place in this dossier with a two-page opening spread: “The first portrait in this series reveals the lesser-known side of the watchmaker who owns Chronom\u00e9trie Beyer in Zurich, a family business synonymous with prestige. Here he is, having turned himself into a television broadcaster. He has acquired the necessary equipment and is traveling with a camera crew to interview his illustrious guests… Such as historian and journalist Nick Foulkes, author of books on watchmaking and president of the jury for the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie. Lights, camera, action! The \u201c<\/em>Beyer Talks\u201d is the name of his TV show, which is gaining popularity online and aims to carve out a share of the watch streaming audience.”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

\u201cRen\u00e9 Beyer sometimes dresses up in a beekeeper’s suit. He produces honey from beehives installed on the roofs of his centuries-old building at 31 Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since April 13, 2025, the honeybees of Zurich have been orphaned. The sound of Ren\u00e9 Beyer’s voice still echoes here and there in the corners of our memories. Even in French, a language he spoke with pleasure and ease.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

These include Journal Suisse d'Horlogerie (2008-2014), Heure Suisse\/Schweiz and Ann\u00e9e Horlog\u00e8re, F\/D\/E (2011-2014), Watchonista.com (2013-2019). In 2019, he founded and chaired \"JSH Archives & Patrimoine\" to relaunch the Swiss watchmaking journal JSH. Then in 2021, he built on his very first editorial venture, the \"bloghorloger.ch\" established on the web in 2003, to come back online with the Swiss Watch Passport\u00ae (by JSH\u00ae).
