Aron-L. Dennison had the honour of introducing the watchmaking industry to America and, from the very beginning, devising the working method that is now its strength<\/em>“<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/div>

This is what Mr. J.-J. Badollet<\/b> wrote upon his return from the Chicago exhibition in 1893, in an initial article entitled \u201cThe Watch Industry in the United States<\/i>.\u201d The watchmaking magazine Swiss Watch Passport (by JSH) reproduced this article, which appeared in the Journal Suisse d’Horlogerie JSH in March 1894.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

\nLa fabrication des montres aux \u00c9tats-Unis remonte \u00e0 l’ann\u00e9e 1850.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Avant cette \u00e9poque, quelques essais avaient \u00e9t\u00e9 faits, notamment en 1837 par les fr\u00e8res Pitkin, qui fabriqu\u00e8rent environ huit cents montres en tout. Mais ces essais ne r\u00e9ussirent pas; ils ne pr\u00e9sentent, du reste, aucun int\u00e9r\u00eat, les moyens employ\u00e9s \u00e9tant ceux connus en Europe \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque.
\nC’est \u00e0 Aron-L. Dennison<\/strong> que revient l’honneur d’avoir introduit en Am\u00e9rique l’industrie horlog\u00e8re, et d’avoir d\u00e8s l’origine con\u00e7u la m\u00e9thode de travail qui fait aujourd’hui sa force.
\nDennison est n\u00e9 en 1812; son p\u00e8re \u00e9tait cordonnier. A treize ans, il gagnait sa vie comme aide-ma\u00e7on; deux ans plus tard, il essayait du m\u00e9tier de son p\u00e8re, qu’il quittait \u00e0 dix-huit ans pour entier en apprentissage chez James Carey, horloger \u00e0 Brunswick, o\u00f9 il resta trois ans.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

M. Howard s’enthousiasma de l’id\u00e9e et cr\u00e9a, en 1850, avec Dennison, la premi\u00e8re fabrique am\u00e9ricaine de montres.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/div>

Cette fabrique rencontra dans la r\u00e9alisation de ses profits d’immenses difficult\u00e9s. Elle dut faire de fr\u00e9quents appels de fonds \u00e0 ses actionnaires. Elle changea plusieurs fois de localit\u00e9 et de titre, s’appelant successivement: American Horologe C\u00b0<\/em>, Warren Manufacturing C\u00b0<\/em> et Boston Watch C\u00b0<\/em>. En 1857, elle fit faillite et fut rachet\u00e9e par l’un de ses cr\u00e9anciers, Royal-E. Robbins. pour la somme de $ 50,500.
\nLes d\u00e9buts de la nouvelle compagnie furent \u00e9galement difficiles.
\nEn 1859, elle prit le titre de American Watch C\u00b0<\/em>, et son capital fut port\u00e9 \u00e0 $ 300,000.
\nEn 1800, elle payait \u00e0 ses actionnaires un dividende de 5%, le premier depuis l’introduction de l’industrie horlog\u00e8re aux \u00c9tats-Unis.
\nDepuis cette \u00e9poque, la Compagnie n’a fait que prosp\u00e9rer, et a pay\u00e9 de forts dividendes, dont le plus \u00e9lev\u00e9 a \u00e9t\u00e9 de 210% en 1865.

\nCe rapide succ\u00e8s fit surgir d’autres fabriques de montres qui, toutes, eurent des commencements difficiles, et dont plusieurs sombr\u00e8rent avant d’avoir vendu un seul mouvement. D’autres ont travers\u00e9 plus heureusement la phase d’organisation et ont prosp\u00e9r\u00e9 depuis.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

Voici, dans leur ordre de cr\u00e9ation, les principales fabriques sur lesquelles j’ai pu obtenir des renseignements:<\/p>\n

1. E. Howard & C\u00b0<\/em>, \u00e0 Roxbury, fond\u00e9e en 1850, reconstitu\u00e9e en 1881, capital: $ 250,000.
\n2. American Watch C\u00b0<\/em>, Waltham, fond\u00e9e en 1857, capital: $ 3,000,000. 3,000 ouvriers, production journali\u00e8re: 2,000 montres.
\n3. Nashua Watch C\u00b0<\/em>, fond\u00e9e en 1859, au capital de $ 100,000, par quelques-uns des principaux employ\u00e9s de la Waltham C\u00b0<\/em>, dans le but de produire un mouvement de qualit\u00e9 sup\u00e9rieure. Apr\u00e8s avoir fabriqu\u00e9 environ 1,000 montres, cette compagnie dut s’arr\u00eater et la compagnie de Waltham racheta l’outillage et les marchandises en 1863.
\n4. Newarh Watch C\u00b0<\/em>, fond\u00e9e en 1864. Ne fabriqua que 3,000 montres; ensuite l’entreprise fut abandonn\u00e9e et l’outillage vendu
\n5. Cornell Watch C\u00b0<\/em>, fond\u00e9e en 1870, au capital de $ 200,000. Elle fut transport\u00e9e en 1874 en Californie et ferm\u00e9e en 1876. C’est dans cette fabrique que l’on a essay\u00e9 d’employer des ouvriers chinois.
\n6. Mozart Watch C\u00b0<\/em>, fond\u00e9e en 1864, capital: $ 100,000. R\u00e9organis\u00e9e en 1867 sous le nom de :

\n8. Fremont ou Melrose Watch C\u00b0<\/em>, fond\u00e9e en 1864, capital: $ 150,000. A suspendu ses op\u00e9rations en 1868.
\n9. National Watch C\u00b0<\/em>, \u00e0 Elgin, fond\u00e9e en 1864, capital: $ 2,000,000. 3,000 ouvriers, production journali\u00e8re: 2,200 montres.
\n10. United States Watch C\u00b0<\/em>, \u00e0 Marion, N. Y., fond\u00e9e en 1865, capital: $ 500,000. 480 ouvriers, production journali\u00e8re: 350 montres. Cette compagnie a suspendu ses op\u00e9rations en 1874.
\n11. New-York Watch C\u00b0<\/em>, Springfield, Mass., fond\u00e9e en 1867, capital: $ 300,000. Incendi\u00e9e en 1870.
\n12. Springfield Illinois Watch C\u00b0<\/em>, fond\u00e9e en 1869, au capital de $ 100,000. R\u00e9organis\u00e9e en 1875 et 1879, au capital de $ 250,000. Occupe 900 ouvriers et produit 500 montres par jour.
\n13. Freeport Watch C\u00b0<\/em>, fond\u00e9e en 1874, capital: $ 250,000. Incendi\u00e9e en 1875.
\n14. Bockford Watch C\u00b0<\/em>, fond\u00e9e en 1874, capital: $ 282,000. 350 ouvriers, production journali\u00e8re: 350 montres.
\n15. Adams & Perry Watch Mfg C\u00b0<\/em>, fond\u00e9e en 1874, capital: $ 70,000. R\u00e9organis\u00e9e plusieurs fois sous divers noms, et connue actuellement sous le nom de:
\n16. Keystone Watch C\u00b0<\/em>, capital: $ 300,000. Production journali\u00e8re: 300 montres.
\n17. Fitchburg Watch C\u00b0<\/em>, fond\u00e9e en 1875. N’a jamais rien produit.
\n18. Auburndale Watch C\u00b0<\/em>, s’est fond\u00e9e en 1876 pour fabriquer un mouvement d’une construction baroque. Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 fait 1.000 montres dont personne n’a voulu.
\n19. Hampden Watch C\u00b0<\/em>, fond\u00e9e en 1877, succ\u00e9da \u00e0 la New-York Watch C\u00b0<\/em> incendi\u00e9e, capital: $ 300,000. Production journali\u00e8re: 400 mouvements, avec un personnel de 400 ouvriers.<\/p>\n

En 1886, M. Dueber, le grand fabricant de boites, \u00e0 la suite de difficult\u00e9s avec l’Association des Jobbers, acheta cette fabrique. La m\u00eame ann\u00e9e, il re\u00e7ut des offres des habitants de Canton (Ohio), qui consistaient en un capital, \u00e0 fonds perdus, de $ 500,000 et vingt acres de terrain, s’il consentait \u00e0 transporter ses deux fabriques de bo\u00eetes et de mouvements dans cette localit\u00e9. Cette offre fut accept\u00e9e, un b\u00e2timent fut construit et achev\u00e9 en 1888, et le mat\u00e9riel d\u00e9m\u00e9nag\u00e9. La nouvelle fabrique a trois \u00e9tages et mesure 380 m\u00e8tres de longueur de fa\u00e7ade. La production est de 1,000 montres par jour. En 1891, cette compagnie a \u00e9prouv\u00e9 des difficult\u00e9s financi\u00e8res qui ont \u00e9t\u00e9 aplanies depuis.<\/p>\n

20. Waterbury Watch C\u00b0<\/em>, fond\u00e9e en 1878, a joui d’un succ\u00e8s sans pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent dans l’histoire de l’horlogerie am\u00e9ricaine. Production journali\u00e8re: 1,500 montres de m\u00e9tal avec un personnel de 400 ouvriers.
\n21. Ind\u00e9pendant Watch C\u00b0<\/em> of Fredonia, N. Y., fond\u00e9e en 1880, capital: $ 150,000. R\u00e9organis\u00e9e en 1883 avec un nouveau capital de $ 150,000, sous le nom de Fredonia Watch C\u00b0<\/em>. R\u00e9organis\u00e9e en 1885 sous le nom de:
\n22. Feoria Watch C\u00b0<\/em>, et transport\u00e9e \u00e0 Peoria, dans l’Illinois, capital: $ 250,000.
\n23. J.-F. Stevens Watch C\u00b0<\/em>, fond\u00e9e en 1880, capital: $ 100,000. A cess\u00e9 ses op\u00e9rations en 1887.
\n24. Columbus Watch C\u00b0<\/em>, fond\u00e9e en 1882, au capital de $ 130,000, port\u00e9 plus tard \u00e0 $ 200,000. 300 ouvriers, production journali\u00e8re : 150 montres.
\n25. Aurora Watch C\u00b0<\/em>, fond\u00e9e en 1883, capital: $ 250,000. 200 ouvriers, production: 100 montres par jour. A cess\u00e9 ses op\u00e9rations depuis deux ans.
\n26. Trenton Watch C\u00b0<\/em>, fond\u00e9e en 1883, sous le nom de New-Haven Watch C\u00b0<\/em>, capital : $ 100,000, port\u00e9 \u00e0 $ 250,000 en 1885. 200 ouvriers, production journali\u00e8re: 180 montres.
\n27. Cheschire Watch C\u00b0<\/em>, fond\u00e9e en 1883, capital: $ 100.000, port\u00e9 ensuite \u00e0 $ 250,000. Production: 150 montres par jour. A cess\u00e9 ses op\u00e9rations en 1891.
\n28. Manhattan Watch C\u00b0<\/em>, fond\u00e9e en 1883, capital: $ 100,000, port\u00e9 ensuite \u00e0 $ 150,000. A cess\u00e9 ses op\u00e9rations derni\u00e8rement.
\n29. United States Watch C\u00b0<\/em>, \u00e0 Waltham, fond\u00e9e en 1884, capital: $ 50,000. N’a pas r\u00e9ussi, a \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9organis\u00e9e en 1888 avec un nouveau capital de $ 150,000, et semble r\u00e9ussir. On confond souvent cette fabrique de troisi\u00e8me ordre avec la grande fabrique de Waltham. Cette erreur a \u00e9t\u00e9 commise tout derni\u00e8rement par des journaux suisses, au sujet d’un rapport fait par des d\u00e9l\u00e9gu\u00e9s de cette fabrique qui ont visit\u00e9 le pavillon suisse \u00e0 Chicago.
\n30. Seth Thomas Watch C\u00b0<\/em>, filiale de la fameuse fabrique de pendules, qui jouit dans le monde entier d’une r\u00e9putation justement m\u00e9rit\u00e9e. La fabrique de montres, qui occupe 200 ouvriers et qui produit 100 montres par jour, n’a pas eu le m\u00eame succ\u00e8s.
\n31. New-York Standard Watch C\u00b0<\/em>, fond\u00e9e en 1877, produit 400 montres par jour. R\u00e9ussit assez bien

En r\u00e9sum\u00e9, trente-deux compagnies, dont la plupart ont disparu ou ont \u00e9t\u00e9 modifi\u00e9es; il en reste actuellement quatorze en activit\u00e9. Je les r\u00e9capitule ci-apr\u00e8s, en indiquant leur capital actuel, le nombre approximatif d'ouvriers qu'elles occupent, et celui des mouvements de montres qu'elles peuvent produire (\u00e9crit dans JSH par M. J.-J. BADOLLET en 1894)<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>

{En conclusion}<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ces quatorze fabriques repr\u00e9sentent donc ensemble un capital de $ 8,082,000, ou, en chiffres ronds, 40,500,000 francs. C’est \u00e0 peu pr\u00e8s le capital actuellement engag\u00e9 dans l’industrie horlog\u00e8re, abstraction faite des sommes perdues.
\nElles occupent ensemble environ 10,500 personnes, et produisent approximativement 8,180 montres chaque jour, soit 2,454,000 par ann\u00e9e.
\nEn 1876, les fabriques am\u00e9ricaines ne produisaient, gu\u00e8re que 1,100 montres par jour. Waltham entrait dans ce chiffre pour 400 environ et Elgin pour 300.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>
